Audio and software engineers involved with CD-interactive (CD-1) and CD-ROM-extended architecture (CD-ROM-XA) disk production often make choices concerning which compression level to adopt. The goal is to obtain the best audio quality results with minimum occupation of disk space. As the optimum compromise depends on the musical material to be compressed, some indications for coder users are investigated here, with both subjective and objective measurements. In this respect, an inductive approach to objective quality evaluation has been applied, starting from sampled notes of different instruments to obtain general statements about source's sensitivity to coding. Finally, the objective results have been compared to listener's opinions to verify the validity of the objective approach and to get some more information.
