This paper will discuss various optical techniques for converting microphone diaphragm movements into electrical signals. One particular interferometric technique will be considered in detail, covering: general theory and background information, practical problems, theoretical responses, practical results. Finally a comparison will be made with conventional techniques and future proposed research will be outlined.
