The deficiencies of two channel stereo have led many to question its suitability for use with high definition television (HDTV). To address these issues, the BBC has been producing multichannel sound for HDTV programmes over the last three years and this paper describes some of the results of that work and the further problems, yet to be addressed, which have come to light.
