Design Considerations for a Compact, Low Cost Correlation/Phase Indicator

Document Thumbnail

Introduced over 30 years ago, X/Y oscilloscopes for monitoring stereo / mono compatibility are now considered standard equipment. The bulk, weight and cost of oscilloscopes, as well as the interpretive skills they demand of the user, have all too frequently pushed engineers into doing without this valuable tool rather than accommodating it. This paper will present design considerations for a compact, easily interpreted LED bar-graph meter which would replace traditional X/Y displays in a variety of audio production, maintenance, and transmission applications. It will uncover common misnomers in terminology pertaining to stereo measurements, and explore the concept of correlation.
