Interactive 3-D Graphics System for Auditorium/Cluster Design

Document Thumbnail

DESPARATE (Display of the Effects of SPeaker ARrays in AudiTorium Environments) is a graphical data entry and data display system which provides the user with a friendly environment for interaction with an underlying loudspeaker array simulation program. It is designed to work on an Evans & Sutherland PS-300 Graphics terminal in conjunction with a DEC VAX 11/780 minicomputer. DESPARATE allows the user to configure an array of speakers, or cluster, to monitor the performance of that cluster within a user-modeled auditorium. This system will be of special interest to loudspeaker design engineers and consultants as an aid in examining different cluster configurations, driver selections, and resultant pattern behavior in the auditorium space to be acoustically covered. Intended primarily as a tool for the loudspeaker design laboratory, DESPARATE will allow the design engineer to observe the overall contributions an individual driver of user specifications makes to the cluster. He will subsequently be able to select drivers which act harmoniously with the other elements of the cluster. The consultant will appreciate DESPARATE's ability to illustrate the various effects of cluster placement within an auditorium model. By comparing the acoustic coverages offered by several different mounting locations, the optimum cluster placement can be established for the desired application.
