Low-Bit Rate Coding of High Quality Audio Signals

Document Thumbnail

A new source coding scheme has been designed for low bit-rate transmitting of digital high-quality audio signals. It is called Masking-pattern Adapted Subband Coding (MASC). The bit-rate is reduced by using subband coding strategies in order to optimize the distribution of quantizing noise and bit-error noise across the signal spectrum with respect to masking effects of the human auditory system. A 24-band partition is used and obtained by a cascade of quadrature mirror filtering operations. The bandsplitting is adapted to the psychoacoustical critical bands. The quantizing resolution of each subband signal is dynamically adapted to the masking pattern, which results from the broadband signal. Each subband has an individual scalefactor. Four fundamental attributes are derived: a) Bit-rate 100kbit/s per high-quality signal; b) adjustable bit-rate/ quality c) inherent insensitivity to bit-errors d) favourable signal processing efficiency.
