When dealing with the practical side of sound reinforcement, the sound engineer needs to know the characteristics of the hall. The classical method of investigation rests on measurements of pressure levels at different points of the area. Now, with F.F.T (Fast Fourier Transform) analysis techniques, the acoustic engineer has direct access to the value of the acoustic intensity vector of the sound field. This results in a better knowledge of the field and of the directivity of the sound wave at different detection points. An application of field intensity metrology is presented here in a study of the acoustics of Senlis cathedral.
