A family of LR-4 circuit topologies is presented that is of direct application to the audiophile class of reproduction systems where system transparency and cost-effective design is paramount. Methodologies including quasi-passive and active realizations are described, where the emphasis is to establish both high- and low-pass filter structures using just four reactive elements and without the need for all-pass compensation. New structures are identified that achieve optimum matrixing without redundant reactive elements and a technique employing a low-feedback, transconductance amplifier is proposed. A design example of a three-way prototype using eight reactive elements is discussed, where loudspeaker compensation includes the use of a mid-range driver with a Butterworth if alignment.
