Vertical Phased Array Speaker Systems for AV and PA Applications

Document Thumbnail

With the advent of laser discs, VHD discs, and CD-Video discs, the need has risen for slim column-type speakers, readily placeable on both sides of large-size video displays. Simultaneously, minimizing the "hole in the middle effect" without resort to a center speaker becomes prime requirement. The VPAS system, with its salient constructional and acoustical features, admirably fulfills these new requirements. Furthermore, a new construction of the acoustical passages connecting the individual speaker units to the common backloading horn permits stacking or side by side extending of the arrayed speaker units and horn mouth sections. This novel construction enables the combining of the speaker assemblies into extensive clustered array systems capable of easy focusing for effective coverage of large PA sound installations. The VPAS system combined with computerized sound-field measurement and modeling, opens up a new field of research that should contribute to the AV industry of the future.
