When a large-scale classical composition is recorded with the multi-mike method and simply mixed won, it is well known that tonal quality is deteriorated due to the "comb-filter" effect. To improve tonal quality, we determined the detectable and permissible limits of the comb-filter effect on various instrumental sounds. The necessity and the accuracy of time-coherency was studied, resulting in a confirmation of the improved tonal quality. Also, a digital mixing console for time-coherent recording is described.
