The quality of a Compact Disc can be measured during each phase of manufacturing. An overview of the manufacturing process is presented along with the tests that can be performed at each stage. Emphasis is placed on real-time analysis of the digital data stream as it passes through error detection circuitry block by block. A multi-player test system is detailed which can monitor Block Error Rate, Burst Errors, and Noise Interpolation Errors. A composite test can be performed using up to eight players which reduces the total test time of a 70-minute CD to under nine minutes.
