A systematic approach to the aural analysis of sound sources is proposed, to provide an objective and qualifiable and quantifiable means by which the aural experience can accurately described and codified. The approach develops the listener/analyst's skills in the analysis and description of the physical properties of the sound source, and evolves methodology from the acquisition of skills of frequency estimation, dynamic contour mapping, and time judgments, through the recognition and codification of timbral characteristics and spatial cues, and the interrelationships of sonic qualities, musical contexts, and message reception (as appropriate). The systematized approach is designed to be applicable and of use to any individual involved in 'describing' the quality and/or meaning of sound, of audio.
