Discussion of the Technical and Operational Characteristics of Two Digital Audio Multichannel Formats: Dash and Pro Digi

Document Thumbnail

This paper gives an overview of two Digital Audio Multichannel Formats existing today, namely DASH (Digital Audio Stationary Head) and PRO DIGI (Professional Digital). Both formats are widely accepted by the professional audio industry and supported by more than one manufacturer. The purpose of this paper is to describe each of the formats and to point out their major differences. This is done by close analysis of general parameters, tape parameters, and data structures related to each format. Error correcting schemes and channel codings incorporated in each of the two formats are described and, where possible, compared. Different approaches by the two formats to the problems associated with electronic editing and cut-splice editing are also discussed.
