A Loudspeaker Motor Structure for Very High Power Handling and High Linear Excursion

Document Thumbnail

In today's rock/pop music arena, greater demands are placed on the loudspeaker than ever before. Higher SPA requirements, higher amplifier capabilities, and wider dynamic range musical inputs are putting a considerable strain on current art to deliver. Necessary are high power capacity, large linear excursion, and low long-term transient power compression. The heart of this achievement is good motor design (i.e., the magnetic structure and voice coil configuration). Described herein is a loudspeaker motor structure that provides a mechanism for keeping the voice coil cooler at all input levels than previous designs, resulting in lower long-term power compression and a greater ability to handle power. Also outlined is a choice of magnetic gap configuration and voice coil architecture that provide high linear excursion and low transient power compression without sacrificing efficiency.
