The availability of high speed signal processors and general purpose computing elements now permits a range of audio processes to be performed at speeds more suited to the operational requirements. For example, a small gain adjustment to a lengthy recording should be made as fast as possible, while very critical, processing intensive activities such as noise reduction may be tolerated at less than real-time rates. This paper examines a number of applications and discusses architectures suitable for their implementation.
