In 1976 the Audio Section of the Victoria Police was created as a result of the increasing need for the technology to assist in investigative procedures. The Section was headed by the then Sergeant Peter Jones, and since that time has grown to become the Victoria Police Audio Visual Division with a staff of 37. In the initial stages, audio recordings were made on open reel monaural formats, and were only utilized when records of interview were read back where crimes of a serious nature were involved. The present date see not only the use of audio recording, but also video in such areas. The Audio Visual Division has the responsibility to provide technical support in the fields of both audio and video on a statewide basis to the Victoria Police, and assistance where required with other police forces or authorities.
