Technical broadcast regulations define 100 percent modulation of a broadcast signal. It is imperative to avoid overmodulation both to minimize audio distortion and to satisfy governing agencies. One purpose for audio processing is to control the transmitter modulation. AM, FM, and Television Aural transmission pose different problems for audio processing as well. Considerations of programming styles and technical performance tradeoffs dictate different approaches to audio processing. This paper discusses, in a general way, the structure and purpose of audio processing for the different broadcast media. Most of the audio processing techniques now in use are discussed, with comments about their advantages and disadvantages.
