Linear predictive coding can be viewed as a transformation which yields the best mean square fit between a signal spectrum and a given order all-pole filter model. By more elaborate application, it can be used to model the sound of a bass guitar as a time-varying-all-pole-digital-filter excited by periodic impulses. Details of the technique and its implications are discussed.
