All transducers have acoustic aperture diffraction effects. Classically, acoustic apertures have been analyzed using the asymptotic form for the diffraction problem commonly used in the optics and microwave fields. The assumptions used in the optical theory are not valid for the acoustics problem. This paper will review the optical theory and its implications regarding the acoustics problem and give some examples. A more accurate simulation of the acoustics problem will then be performed numerically and the results compared with the optics approach.
