A Spectrographic Study of Formant Tracking

Document Thumbnail

Research into the phenomenon of speech has revealed significant correlation between the speech event and the formant structure of the corresponding facsimile signal. Knowledge gained from this research currently promises to lead to new speech bandwidth compression devices and in the future to automatic speech recognition devices. This paper presents an analysis of the spectral structure of speech formants for certain consonants and vowels as they exist in facsimile speech, and the same speech as regenerated by a formant tracking speech compression system. A new device for conducting the analysis, the SPEECH MICROSCOPE, was employed and is described in the paper.
