We have developed an apparatus which measures the acoustical characteristics of a room using both analog and digital techniques. The combined use of these two techniques has allowed us to design a compact, easy-to-use apparatus. The following can be measured: a) Reverberation time vs. Frequency band characteristics, b) Sound-transmission vs. Frequency band characteristics, c) definition vs. Frequency band characteristics, d) Space averaging of the above from up to 12% different locations, and e) the reverberation decay curve in any frequency band. The operator can set the upper and lower limits to be analyzed within a 50 Hz to 10 kHz range, in steps of one third of an octave. The apparatus is designed to measure both the room and the acoustical qualities of all electrical and mechanical elements of the system. A mini-printer displays the results in tables and graphs. All measurements are processed in real-time.
