A Tool for Room Acoustic Measurement

Document Thumbnail

Presented is a portable tool developed for the purpose of field measurement of accurate reverberation time and transmission frequency characteristics of a given enclosure. This tool, involving a CRT and a tone burst generator, is termed AS-1 and displays computation results such as ensemble-averaged reverberation curves associated with calculated RT60, D50, and EDT10) through the minimized operation. The adoption of microprocessor and its peripherals as well as ideas to reduce the data size has allowed the online and real-time measurement of these parameters ordinarily obtained on a large off-line computer. This paper mainly describes the functions and system architecture of this tool, introducing the data obtained in the actual measurements and the digital signal processing technologies employed. Associated with its spatial averaging and synchronized averaging capability, AS-1 is also applicable to the absorption coefficient measurements and examination of audio equipment, requiring only a pair of speakers and a microphone, and no other apparatus such as sweep generator and level recorder or no complicated measurement techniques.
