The Spokane Opera House is a 2,700-seat proscenium theater which opened in May of 1974. Data from 656 programs that used the opera house between January 1, 1975 and January 1, 1980, is presented to show the number of inputs utilized, the frequencies of use of different types of performer monitors, the approximate sound pressure level (SPL) required of the theater audience loudspeaker system, and the frequency of use of road sound equipment, in addition to or in lieu of house equipment. Based on this experience, some standards are proposed for theater sound systems.
