On the Transient Response of Ideal Crossover Networks

Document Thumbnail

This investigation is an attempt to explain a difference in the sound quality of a system employing crossover networks that can be either 6 db per octave or 12 db per octave filters. To insure proper termination of the network and proper driving impedance for the loudspeakers, separate power amplifiers are used to drive the high and low frequency loudspeakers. To demonstrate this effect at the 1961 Annual Convention of the AUDIO ENGINEERING SOCIETY, two identical amplifiers and wide range loudspeaker systems will be used as shown in the block diagram of Fig. 1. This is not the intended use of the crossover network but rather an attempt to demonstrate the properties of the crossover network under -ideal- conditions.
