Wide-Range, High-Power Tweeter Using the Printed-Planar Voice Coil (the "Leaf Tweeter")

Document Thumbnail

From the viewpoint of waveform-transmission, the response of the tweeter must be flat as far up to the high frequency range as possible. The ribbon-type dynamic transducer is well known, but the basic disadvantage of this type is that the handling power is much lower, and a transformer is needed for impedance matching. In this paper, a dynamic tweeter reproducing a frequency range of from 4 kHz to 150 kHz, and having a handling power of 20 W (continuous sine wave) is presented. This Leaf Tweeter has a planar voice coil printed on a very thin diaphragm (polyimide thermostable film of 7.5 um thickness) which is placed on top of two parallel magnetic air gaps. Uniformity of distribution of the driving force, the conditions necessary to obtain a flat response as the ratio of the mass of the printed-planar voice coil to the mass of the base film, and acoustic performance are presented.
