Loudness Compensation: Use and Abuse

Document Thumbnail

A listening survey of conventional loudness controls led to te subjective impression that most of them overcompensate. The well-known Fletcher-Munson contours are shown to be an improper basis for loudness compensation. Differential loudness contours, however, can be used to account for the fact that the ear's response is not flat at any chosen reference level. Also, experimental data after Fletcher-Munson is examined for applicability to loudness compensation. Computer generated tables are included along with several circuits developed to follow the new curves.
