A review of the basis of loudspeaker driver parameter measurement and loudspeaker synthesis techniques shows that the small-signal performance of a driver is best described by the following parameters: its free-air resonance frequency (Fsa); its mechanical, electrical, and total quality factors (Qms, Qes, and Qts); its dc voice coil resistance (Re); its effective voice coil inductance (Le); and the volume of air having the same compliance as its mechanical suspension (Vas). These parameters may be derived by analysis of the electrical terminal impedance of the driver. Most differences in measurement result from incorrect approximations used in interpreting raw test data or poor data taking techniques. These measurements can be automated with a resulting improvements in documentation and accuracy and a great saving of lab and computational time.
