The purpose of this paper is to review currently used voltage controlled amplifiers and attenuators in the audio field. Included are thorough looks and specifications and design flaws commonly encountered in this field. Focus is intentionally restricted to the use of these devices as attenuators, since (a) fixed gain can be taken before or after the VCA in circuit, and (b) the performance of these devices has (to date) proven inferior to conventional gain circuits.
