A Real Time Audio to Visual Music Transcriber (AVMT)

Document Thumbnail

The development of a Real Time Audio to Visual Music Transcriber (AVMT), based on the application of phase locked loop integrated circuits (tone decoders) is described. It is a useful tool for musicians and composers, as forming a potential means of program learning for music students and constitutes laboratory equipment for experiment in musical engineering. This music transcriber allows musical tones played by several instruments, to be decoded and then displayed in real time on a CRT screen, with similar notation to that used in standard music. The method used employs the graphic terminal of a PDP 11 minicomputer, together with associated software. The principle of operation, the description of the system and the experimental results obtained with different instruments are presented.
