Through experimentation into phantom image localization from both inphase and antiphase sources a sound reproduction system has been devised which requires only three audio channels. The system uses a coincident array of microphones to generate signals which may be applied to three loudspeakers directly. The system provides accurate localization only in the forward half of the horizontal plane; however, a sense of immersion and ambience is felt from the rear.
