In anticipation of the emergence of Digital Audio Recorders, I have been conducting a program to investigate the applicability of various electrical and mechanical recording formats to the professional audio community. Operational features have been defined that a professional digital audio recorder must have to fulfill the needs of current recording techniques as well as new ones which will evolve because of the capabilities of digital recording. This paper presents a digital audio recorder format which provides these operational features.
