A Tri-Amplified Monitor Loudspeaker Based on High-Quality Direct Radiator Drivers

Document Thumbnail

The loudspeaker has been developed for the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK), and is the result of a cooperation between NRK, SEAS FABRIKKER A.S. of Norway, and XELEX AB of Sweden... High fidelity electrodynamic drivers were modified by adding as much magnetic flux as possible. The drivers were mounted in a rigid cabinet which was given an unusual shape in order to reduce the reflection of sound energy from the cabinet front edges. Each driver was equipped with a power amplifier capable of delivering about 125 watts. In order to avoid burn-out of the mid-range and treble drivers, circuits calculating the voice-coil temperatures were used to control light-dependent attenuators situated in front of the power amplifiers. The dividing network was a passive 3-way filter of low complexity. In practical use, the loudspeaker proves to be a precise instrument for program control. Low coloration and distortion at sufficient sound levels together with sharp and stable imaging are among the merits of the loudspeaker.
