It is well known that poor waveform reproduction from a magnetic recording system is due to nonlinear phase response. However, a quantitative analysis has lately been attempted. The authors viewed the problem from its group delay characteristics and carried out measurements on various recording formats using a pulse train method. A peculiar group delay caused by phase nonlinearity was observed in the low-frequency range and its origin was tracked down to the playback process.
