Most single-band audio signal dynamic range expanders suffer from cross-modulation effects, insufficient "apparent" expansion, and/or stereo image shift, susceptibility to only a small range of frequencies or too broad a range of frequencies, and slow attack time. Also, most do not incorporate a sophisticated algorithm for attack and release behavior. The expander described here addresses all of the above problems using a combination of level detector sophistication (including infrasonic filters), proportional-plus-derivative attack behavior, and program-determined release rate. Also, stereo image shift is prevented by "gang"-ing the two channels, which are controlled by a single level detector.
