Multimicrophone Pickup of Solitary Acoustical Instruments for Single-Channel Transmission

This paper deals with the theoretical and experimental analysis of the application of a complex form of close microphone placement which uses more than one microphone on a solitary acoustical instrument. Spectral analysis and listening tests demonstrated the advantages of the close multi-microphone pick-up over the traditional single close microphone. This method of timbre reconstruction is especially applicable in single-channel transmission which lacks binaural information where the timbre (spectrum) is the major carrier of information about the natural sound of the instrument. This multi-microphone technique has the potential, in the recording of acoustic instruments, to attain more effective timbre control and thus achieve better sound quality by combining the characteristics of close and distant microphone techniques.
