Leveler induced distortion is a significant performance limiter in high performance low frequency oscillators. The state variable oscillator topology is analyzed and compared with some other popular topologies for their sensitivity to this form of distortion. Other distortion mechanisms are considered as are some practical concerns of oscillator design. The Tektronix SG505, a new oscillator employing these design principles, will be reviewed.
