Some Overlooked Sources of Non-Linearity in Analog Amplification Circuits

Document Thumbnail

In the quest for circuit designs with improved signal linearity we have observed several previously neglected nonlinear effects: 1) Nonlinear interaction between gain stages due to voltage-dependent input impedances particularly with FETs, 2) circumstances under which the effect of loop feedback, in reducing distortion, is less than that predicted from the loop gain, and 3) nonlinearities in passive elements such as capacitors, resistors, and potentiometers. These effects play an important role in setting the limits to the circuit linearity that is achievable with present-day active devices.
