Open plan offices and schools have rather stringent acoustical requirements relating to annoyance, speech privacy, and communication. These factors are largely signal-to-noise considerations. Evaluation of open plan acoustics requires measurement of sound propagation and background noise within the space. Current techniques employ extensive one-third octave band measurements reasonably implemented under laboratory conditions, but cumbersome under field conditions. A simplified method for rapid evaluation in the field is proposed.
