Spectrum Analysis of Tape Recorder Distortion

Document Thumbnail

Narrow-band analysis of the record-playback distortion products reveals that the results obtained with regular harmonic distortion meters are in error over a considerable range of record levels because of the effects of noise. The results of such analysis for a number of recorders with various tape types is presented in comparison with the data from two commonly used meters. Guidelines are provided for utilizing the data from such meters to determine when distortion measurement requires the use of a spectrum analyzer.
