Various approaches to specifying the power handling capabilities of loudspeaker systems are discussed with an emphasis on sound reinforcement applications. A practical method of establishing a specification is presented, based on the use of suitable program material as a calibrated test signal. The results are used to formulate a specification that relates loudspeaker power-handling capability to power amplifier specifications. This information is felt to be quite meaningful for the user who is faced with the task of selecting a suitable power amplifier and loudspeaker combination.
