Creating Source Elevation Illusions by Spectral Manipulation

Document Thumbnail

Monaural hearing sensitivity curves indicate that the external ear produces specific, distinguishable features in the transformation of the incident spectra, which are dependent upon source elevation. By electronically imposing these spectral features on certain signals presented monaurally, the illusion of continuously-variable, lateral source elevations (from ~ -45° to ~ +45°) may be created using a single stationary source.
