Two microphones with response patterns so spaced as to overlap at the point where the response of each is approximately three decibels down, will have a combined response substantially the same as that of a single microphone placed midway between the two. A two-track stereo system using the above two microphones contains the essence of a third channel, which may be recovered by a combination of the existing tracks; the mixture of the two flanking channels is made after attenuating each channel three decibels. Successful circuits are shown.
