High Quality Professional Recording Using New Digital Techniques

Document Thumbnail

This paper focuses on a system embodying new methods for digitizing analog signals, storing the digitized data on magnetic tape, and reconstructing the analog signals from the digital format. Since the system is addressed to the high quality professional recording of audio signals, the first matter to be discussed is the rationale for digitizing audio. This is followed by a description of the requirements for such a system and the technical constraints involved. Th'new method for digitization is presented and compared with previously used methods. The system designed to implement the new method is described. Specific attention is given to the techniques used to assure high quality reproduction while overcoming problems commonly encountered with available professional tape transport mechanisms. Applications of the new methods both within the field of professional audio and outside this field are suggested.
