The Pitfalls of the General Purpose IC Operational Amplifier as Applied to Audio Signal Processing

Document Thumbnail

General purpose internally compensated IC op amps with unity gain frequencies of 1 MHz have become an industry standard. Despite the attractiveness of these devices with the attendant applications of simplicity and economy, the fact remains that in many situations they invovle serious tradeoffs in performance when universally applied. Better performance may be realized by applying IC op-amps with the performance criteria for the specific application in mind. In this manner such key parameters as slewing rate, gain bandwidth product, power output and input noise may be optimized as required.
