In his daily work the sound recording engineer is confronted with many problems. Not the least of which is that environment within which he works. Of particular concern are control room acoustics. This paper details some of the advances that have been made in this respect. It is the practice of the acoustical engineer to strive towards a solution which will enable all listening environments and monitoring systems to be designed in such a way as to present consistent conditions to the engineer. With the technical advances that have recently been made in electronics with regard to measurement and analytical facilities, it is now possible to explore in great detail the sound patterns that exist within listening rooms and to understand their relevant meanings. The results of investigations into modes of acoustical environment and acoustic design are discussed.
