Distortion Minimization in Transistorized Audio Voltage Amplifiers

Document Thumbnail

In this paper, a new expression for the optimum source resistance for which the second harmonic distortion of a resistance loaded common emitter amplifier is zero, is first derived. Then the effects of the local feedback on this resistance is investigated. These calculations are carried out in terms of the coefficients of the power series which represent the nonlinear input and transfer characteristic curves of transistor. It is shown that the coefficients of these power series can be easily calculated. Problems relating to the design of multistage amplifiers are discussed and a design example of a 3-stage amplifier is given. The measured total harmonic distortion ratio on the realized unit was < % 0.05 for an output swing of 20 Vpp. The results obtained seem valuable for the design of high quality sound systems.
