Low Frequency Measurement of Loudspeakers by the Near-Field Sound Pressure Sampling Technique

A loudspeaker test technique is described which depends on near-field pressure measurements made in a non-anechoic environment. Derived equations show that (in the piston range low frequency region) the ratio of far-field to near-field pressures is independent of frequency and related only by two length parameters. The technique allows extremely simple measurements to be made of frequency response, power response, distortion, efficiency and driver/system parameters. The technique is similar in concept to that described by Small [8], but is much simpler to implement and is accurate over a wider frequency range.
