In designing a magnetic tape for use in low speed cassette recording systems, it is necessary to reduce tape noises without altering the sensitivity, frequency response, or other characteristics of that tape. This report describes the various elements that originate tape noise, in view of variations of uniform particle dispersion and surface finishing. A new cassette tape, Maxell UD, showing remarkable DC noise characteristics and wide dynamic range is discussed.
