Auralization of QRD and Other Diffusing Surfaces using Scale Modelling

Document Thumbnail

Auralization of computer models of auditoria and loudspeakers can be achieved using geometrical acoustics. This means that a ray tracing and/or image source approach is used. To the authors knowledge no existing commercial auditorium acoustics or sound reinforcement analysis computer program offers the extended possibilities of analyzing sound propagation using geometrical acoustics but approximating the physical effects of any particular diffusor in a detailed manner. This pilot study presents some results of subjective tests of some examples of scattering or diffusing surface treatments using scale modelling and auralization. The tests indicate that various types of diffusing surfaces have their own sound character as judged by informal listening tests. The paper also discusses the problems of using geometrical acoustics analysis for auralization if scattering is to be taken into account.
