New Music Buildings-The Sonic Environment

New types of music are beginning to demand new approaches to music rooms and buildings. Records, radio and television have been changing listening habits and expectations during the last twenty years to a degree little recognized by musicians or behavioral scientists. The sudden emergence in the last five years of new tools for electronic music-synthesizers and electronic modifiers for live performance-have carried music far beyond the limits of the traditional concert hall. The trend is toward continuing metamorphosis of performance media, and more varied demands on the acoustic environment.
